Thing 4-Online Communities

PS-Almost forgot to post about the video and things that surprised me?
Number one-the music they chose was not soothing to listen to-LOL. I am glad to hear that Social Media activities have outperformed pornography! Surprised to hear the Ed. Dept. say that performance of on-line students did better than face-to-face. I'm wondering if that's my district's justification of letting librarians go (a little tongue-in-cheek humor there...) and convincing others that this is best for high school and college students-pretty soon we won't need any teachers, librarians, or professors!  Don't know how I feel tho :( about the statistic that Kindle outsold paper books this year at Christmas. I think this makes me sad. There is just something to me about holding and reading a physical book. Not to say there shouldn't be ANY other option, I just hope it does not become the ONLY option. As of now, I am really NOT a twitter fan. I really do not care enough that I want to read what ANYONE is doing every living minute of the day. I have two friends who do this on Facebook ( at least I did think that was what Twitter was for...) and I now hide their posts!!!Sorry... Random facts and thoughts are fine, but minute to minute-no thank you-not for me! I wouldn't even want to read my own! And who has the time?!?!? Someone else mentioned about having all these accounts and remembering all the log-in info and all the places to look-can really get overwhelming and cumbersome. I agree. And again- who has all this time!?!?
And- I do wonder what is happening to any real form of face-to-face communication. I think we will have lost all skill and I truly believe this is leading to the rise of the loss of empathy in humans...People will no longer know HOW to relate to others because they don't ever have to-for anything-if they so chose!
Stepping off the soapbox- nuf said!

Thing 4-Online Communities- My 3 cents!

I have to agree with Linda's post and my school's policy about Facebook pages. Altho our school does not have a policy written in stone- we are STRONGLY DISCOURAGED from friending any student-not like that is something I would chose do anyways. Here's where it gets sticky tho. I AM friends with my daughter on Facebook. She has become friends with kids who have graduated in the district where I teach and I actually did have some of them or THEY are friends with kids I had as students. Not that any of them have "friended" me-nor again-would I of them, but page content is available to either of us once we share friends. I really don't have any content that would bother me who really was looking, but I have to say- I have been shocked at some of the stuff I have seen on my news feed-mostly language and some very suggestive photography. I know some of my friends with children tell me that is why they DO NOT have a Facebook page...guess it is a double-edge sword.
I too am wondering (and my girls know this by heart-"We know Mom-the Facebook lecture!") if people realize how many employers DO use and check your Facebook page. My oldest niece was taken aback when her internship boss called her in one day and "suggested" she remove a photo of herself drinking while she was studying abroad in England (she was not 21 at the time but in England she WAS old enough to drink). She felt like he had been "spying" on her and invaded her privacy-he felt like he was giving her the heads-up advice of a caring employer-you chose. But the point is-they do and can look. The sad thing is-some of the stuff  I've seen posted by some kids?!?!? They can only hope and pray no one they apply for a job with cares or looks!
And-you really have to be careful of who you friend. I know for alot of people it is a game of numbers. My children tease me about my "lowly number" of friends, but I only use my page as a social one-would be different story if it was for a business or different purpose.  I follow a rule I once read a long time ago-if they aren't someone you would invite into you living room, then they aren't someone you should friend on Facebook. Have to say, it's always worked out well for me...
To me it's no different than any online site you use- you just need to be responsible about what you chose to say, post and share.

Thing 3- Photo Sharing and Flickr

Here are the photos from the shoot I took when we were planning on making the READ posters for our school. Funding later got canned for that project, but I thought most of them came out nice enough to save for later. (set: Look Who's Reading!
I felt like it took no time at all going to Flickr and uploading my stuff and having cdlc be "my group". I struggled however getting them here!
I can see where this would be a great tool in an elementary school for teachers and students. For teachers- they would be able to make separate groups of photos to share with parents of things that were going on in the classroom, or field trips, etc... another for staff to share on whatever-sharing things that may work in your classroom or even critiquing sessions.
I'm now thinking of a ton of things that we've done in library that would be great to share with other teachers, staff at faculty meetings, and parents at PTO and board meetings-(you mean I could just send the photos and wouldn't have sit up thru the entire night for a board meeting???!!) Also was thinking of a great activity that could be done with making personal connections to stories that we do with photos- I think that could be a lot of fun!  You could share with your students pics of them-they always love those- or have them post photos to share.
I know there are alot of visual learners and just those that love to look (myself included in both categories!) that this could be used for. I'm thinking what I would probably be using it most for at least to begin with is LIBRARY PROMO!
It would also be great to have a collection of ideas for you only that you personally liked and would like to adapt later on. I know I often see things and then later forget, but as they say- a picture is worth a thousand words...( Sandra's post actually gave me that idea for myself too. Thanks Sandra!! :)

Thing 2-RSS

I am having fun adding things, but wow! It is overwhelming and I can see how this can become addicting! There is just so much interesting stuff out there and I am glad I at least figured how to categorize and organize-even just the few I have. But at least now too- I feel I have a few good categories and can add as I go along and come across other things. Are we doing pictures next, I thought I saw somewhere? I am anxious to put some up since I have been playing with my camera I got for Christmas this year...
I read Rose's blog about how she's changing her pages at home from what we've done here, but I think for now-til I know what I REALLY want to keep on my pages and play a little more-I'll just keep this and my google page for class. Like I said-the all of the "other things" are still a bit overwhelming to me")

Thing 2-RSS

Well- I do feel a little more comfortable "accumulating" things. But maybe I am thinking it is more complicated than it really is. Format reminds me of some of the ed. newsletters I subscribe to- and like receiving stuff in your e-mailbox. Am I missing something, or do I "get" it and am just obsessing over something that came easier than I thought?

Thing 2- RSS

Have to admit-was a bit more overwhelmed on this assignment than the last-guess I just got a little too overconfident. Maybe I also just started a little too late at night! Hoping I got all in that needed to be done? We'll have to see how it all looks tomorrow. As Scarlett said- "Tomorrow is a new day...":)

Thing 1-"Blogging"

HI! I am currently shared between two elementary schools as the School Media Specialist-just found out last week- now to be .5 shared (I wonder how that will work?) for next year.
I decided to take this on-line opportunity since our district has once again frozen all funds for any Professional Development opportunity for the second year in a row and I feel like I am getting further and further behind on keeping myself up-to-date!
